I received a free early copy from Nolan Armenta. This review is voluntary and my own honest opinion.
Early copy requests need a Booklabria account.
Defense lawyer Teresa Soria is handed an impossible murder case. Her client has a living alibi witness, but refuses to name him because the alibi depends on a kidnapping. As a witness prepares to leave the country, Teresa follows the records from a truck dispatch to a locked storage bay and a disputed payment. She can win the murder trial without forgiving her client. She cannot do it without discovering what his alibi is hiding.
At arraignment, defense lawyer Teresa Soria gets the case nobody wants: Mateo Velez, accused of first-degree murder after a private investigator’s body is found on his flatbed truck. The evidence looks simple. Blood on Mateo’s shirt. His truck under the body. A warning he sent the victim before the killing. The state’s timeline leaves one narrow opening, and Mateo has a living witness who can place him somewhere else that night. He will not give Teresa the witness’s name. The reason is worse than the murder charge. Mateo admits he held the man captive, threatened him, and used his daughter to arrange the location. The witness may prove Mateo was elsewhere. He may also expose a separate crime, destroy the defense, and leave Teresa representing a client who has already chosen what truth he can afford. With the trial date approaching and a key witness leaving the country, Teresa must test every record herself: a truck’s dispatch history, a disputed billing entry, a paid rental, a locked storage bay, and an anonymous call that may identify the killer or only someone who knew the body was there. The verdict will close the murder case. It will not make Mateo innocent. A not-guilty verdict is not the same as an innocent client.
