The Quiet House on Tern Lane

She moved to the island to feel safe. It's working perfectly. That's the problem. A grieving woman takes the last ferry to a fog-bound town where nothing bad can reach her, becomes certain a stranger is hunting her, and finds that every gentle explanation is a door quietly closing.

After her husband drowned, Nora Quaid takes the last ferry to Saltchurn, a fog-bound town on a speck of island off the Maine coast, where the world ends at the water and a clapboard cottage on Tern Lane is waiting for her. Her sister Beth has promised her the same thing every day since: nothing bad can reach you here. Then a man starts photographing the house through the fog. A stranger at the ferry rail says a childhood nickname Nora is certain she never told a living soul. A name surfaces on a flyer in a town she has never visited, a name that stops her cold for reasons she cannot explain. Everyone has a gentle answer for all of it. Grief. Exhaustion. A mind worn thin by loss. Take your pills, Nora. Get some rest. You are safe. But the safest places are the ones no one can hear you in. The ferry that keeps the world out also seals her inside. The neighbours who look out for each other are always, somehow, looking at her. And the kindest voice in Nora’s life keeps correcting memories she is sure she never shared. The deeper she digs, the less she can trust the one thing she has never questioned: the story of who she is. Everyone says it is grief unravelling her. Everyone is lying, including the voice inside her own head. Some houses keep you safe. This one was built to keep you.
