Follow authors, readers and series; notifications arrive in-app, grouped; e-mail is a digest you control.

You can follow authors (their pen name), readers and series. Following an author means their Journal entries and new books reach your feed and your notifications; following a series means you hear when its next book is published.
Notifications live under the bell. Repeats are grouped ("three people reacted…"), everything can be marked read at once, and each kind can be switched off under Settings › Notifications. E-mail, when it is on for the deployment, is a digest — daily or weekly, your choice — never one e-mail per event.
