Release Announcement
Getting Better, 11 September. There is no monster in it.
My first novel comes out on 11 September. It is called Getting Better, it is a Quarry Bend novel, and I want to tell you plainly what it is, because I would rather you did not buy it by mistake. Bernie Kovach brings her mother home to die. Hospice gives her a number in plain words: days to weeks. She writes it on the kitchen calendar in pencil, so that it can come off. Then her mother asks for eggs. By Christmas Irene is on her feet for nine hours cooking a dinner. Everyone on Lister Street calls it a miracle, and they are not wrong. And Bernie, who has not slept properly since November, is losing weight, and hours, and teeth that have nothing wrong with them. It is a quiet book. I say that out loud on purpose. There is no monster in it. Nobody gets chased. Everything frightening in it is a body, a document, or a schedule, and every part of it has a reasonable explanation, and the book gives you the explanation every time. Any doctor would say so. One does. It is about what it costs to be the one who stays. If that is a question you have lived inside, I wrote this for you. If you want a scare, this is not the shelf, and I would rather say so now.
