The Long Kindness is out today
The Long Kindness is out today on Kindle. She was loved for forty years. She was never once asked. That is the line on the front, and it is the only line in the book that explains itself. What you are buying: a fair-play literary mystery about records, consent, and who gets to decide what a person is strong enough to know. A woman who clears the houses of the dead, a cottage on a cliff with nine days left, nine boxes with her name on them, and a sixth box that is not there. Photographs of her at every age. A hospital wristband with a date three weeks before the birthday she has kept for thirty-nine years. What you are not buying: a stranger at the door. There is no villain. Everybody in this book did their job, and some of them did it with love, and that is what you will be sitting with at three in the morning. It is a true standalone. The ending is closed and it is checkable. I will never cheat you, and I will never waste your time; that is the whole of my contract with you and this book keeps both halves. There is no paperback on sale yet. For now, the ebook, and a quiet room. Thank you for reading me twice this summer.
